Description
Without doubt, street art has become one of the most visible forms of contemporary urban expression and one of the most iconic forms of pop visual culture.
Murals, graffiti, and public artworks often reflect social issues, cultural identities, and community narratives.
For educators, this means that these visual messages offer a precious opportunity to connect their students’ learning with real urban environments.
This course responds to the growing need for innovative, engaging, and context-based learning approaches by exploring how street art can be used as a powerful educational resource.
By observing and analyzing local urban artworks, participants will learn how public art can represent a starting point to foster discussion, critical thinking, and creative exploration in the classroom.
Combining formal and non-formal education approaches, this course intends to emphasise practical application and active participation.
The course will include guided urban walks, museum visits, practical workshops, and collaborative design activities.
The goal will be to demonstrate how urban spaces can be transformed into open-air classrooms and how murals, graffiti, and even public installations can be interpreted as visual texts that communicate ideas about identity, social change, and community life.
Participants will gain strategies to foster creativity, inclusion, civic awareness, and intercultural dialogue through street art.
The exploration of diverse street art areas in the city allows educators to understand how visual expression reflects social issues, identity, activism, and community narratives.
Exploring practical techniques used by street artists, they will also discuss the ethical, social, and legal dimensions of urban art.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement street art–based educational activities, integrate urban creativity into teaching practice, encourage dialogue on social and cultural themes, and apply interdisciplinary and project-based learning methods in their own contexts.
They will leave with practical strategies, ready-to-use tools, and a deeper understanding of how street art can enrich education and empower learners.
