The listed audiences are those for whom the course is especially recommended, but courses are not exclusive to them and are open to everyone. In fact, most of our workshops are built around the collective sharing of participants’ experiences and having a variety of profiles enriches the learning process and is highly encouraged!
This course is designed for secondary and high school teachers who want to strengthen the practice of art as an alternative to the misuse of social media and technology in their students’ everyday lives, reducing time spent using mobile devices, and as a possible means to promote growth in students.
Maintaining equilibrium and encouraging safe technology use are essential for students’ academic performance and general well-being.
During the course participants will be actively involved in a series of individual and group art activities, that will cover many aspects of the art making process, learn from each other and co-create in a safe environment where the artwork will be not considered as an “academic result” rather it will be witness of a creative process that has to do with the artist (the students) life, society and approach to the world.
During the week they will be proposed several inputs and art techniques will be proposed, and a series of creative activities that students (and teachers!) can practice during the lesson or in their free time, instead of “scrolling”!
By the end of the course, participants will be able to approach art-making activities with a refreshed perspective, renewed motivation and inspiration, understand the importance of practicing art to promote wellbeing and social cohesion in students, and to promote awareness of a different, creative lifestyle.
Learn about the importance of art in students’ growth and the necessity of balancing online and offline time;
Learn how to engage students through art and work on relevant topics, for themselves and the community (personal development, inclusion, sustainability, social issues);
Practice different art activities and techniques in the first person and be ready to propose them to their students using different materials;
Exchange experiences with teachers from other schools and co-create creative projects.
Tentative schedule
Day 1 – Course introduction and empowering students through the arts
Introduction to the course, the school, and the external week activities;
Icebreaker activities;
Presentations of the participants’ schools;
The practice of art and growth in students;
Exploring identity through visual art: collage art activity “Is this me?”;
“1 art work a day challenge”: make it practical, make it fun! Prompts and topics to make the art practice useful and consistent.
Day 2 – Art and design workshop: from trash to treasure
Introduction about sustainable art – art history references;
How to make art using nature as a tool, and to protect nature;
From theory to practice: design a sustainable art souvenir for your city;
Create an ephemeral art installation with recycled materials – outdoor activity;
Reflection time: technology and art in our schools – art tech tools exchange.
Day 3 – Speak up! Use art to express ideas and social statements
Art as a tool for constructive social change, confronting injustice, and increasing consciousness: presentation of famous artists’ works;
Individual reflection on the preferred topic – poster design and making! – Art exhibition
Speak up together! – Creation of a collective mural on a shared topic.
Day 4 – Art and freedom, art without rules
Introduction to Art and wellbeing: the healing potential of making art practices and creative mindfulness;
Presentation of mindful abstract art techniques: dripping, blowing, bubbles, pattern creation;
Introduction to Lettering technique;
Personal project: realization of “My freedom” artwork.
Day 5 – Art as a way to embrace diversity and foster inclusion
Contrasts in art (in materials, in colors, in concepts). Sketching around – outdoor activity, hunting for contrasts;
Celebrating diversity through contrasts – creating a sculpture without clay;
How to help our students disconnect from social media: the artful journal;
Creating a project for our schools.
Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities
Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competences, feedback, and discussion;
