How to reach us

Bilbao is served mainly by Bilbao Airport (BIO), the main international gateway to the Basque Country and one of the busiest airports in northern Spain.

Whether you are arriving from major European cities or with domestic flights from across Spain, the airport is easily accessible for anybody.

Bilbao is also well linked to the rest of Spain and its European neighbors by a network of fast, reliable trains and long-distance buses.

How to reach us

By plane:

If you are flying to Bilbao, the best airport option is definitely the Bilbao Airport (BIO), which is the main international airport serving the city and is located about 12 km from the city center and is connected by regular bus services, with the Bizkaibus A3247 providing a direct trip to central Bilbao in around 20–30 minutes for approximately €3.

Alternatively, Vitoria-Gasteiz Airport (VIT), about 65 km away, and San Sebastián Airport (EAS), about 100 km away, can be used as well, but they mainly handle domestic flights and offer fewer connections, making them less practical for most travelers.

Get to Bilbao by plane

By train:

Bilbao-Abando Station

Located in the city center, Bilbao-Abando is the main railway hub, with easy connections to regional and long-distance trains, as well as metro, buses, and taxi services for convenient access around the city and beyond.

Best Things to Do in Bilbao

Bilbao is the largest city in the Basque Country and one of the most important urban centers in northern Spain. Situated along the Nervión River near the Bay of Biscay, this historic city blends a strong industrial heritage with striking natural surroundings, cultural vitality, contemporary architecture, and the confident spirit of a modern metropolis.

Founded in 1300 by Diego López V de Haro, Bilbao began as a strategic trading port that played a key role in regional commerce and maritime activity. Over the centuries, shaped by trade, industry, social change, innovation, and art, it has evolved into a dynamic and forward-looking city.

Today, Bilbao is known for its successful urban transformation, where sustainable development, cutting-edge design, and a growing creative and cultural scene coexist seamlessly with its deep-rooted Basque identity.

1) Guggenheim Museum

An architectural masterpiece by Frank Gehry, the Guggenheim is Bilbao’s most famous attraction. Inside, cutting-edge contemporary art meets innovative exhibitions in a truly iconic setting.

2) Casco Viejo (Old Town)

The historic heart of Bilbao is full of narrow streets, colorful buildings, and lively squares. Here you can feel the city’s medieval roots while enjoying shops, cafés, and local life.

3) Artxanda Funicular

This short but scenic ride takes you up Mount Artxanda for breathtaking panoramic views of the city. It’s ideal for photos and a peaceful break above the urban buzz.

4) Mercado de la Ribera

One of Europe’s largest covered markets, it’s a paradise for food lovers. Fresh local produce and riverside views make it both authentic and vibrant.

5) Nervión River Walk & Guggenheim Area

Strolling along the Nervión River offers beautiful views of Bilbao’s modern skyline and public art, like the Puppy or the Zubizuri Bridge. It’s the perfect place to experience the city’s transformation and relaxed atmosphere.

6) Basque Museum (Euskal Museoa)

Located in the Old Town, this museum offers insight into Basque history and traditions. It’s a great place to understand the region’s unique culture.

7) Pintxos Tour in the Old Town

Sampling pintxos is a must-do Bilbao experience. Move from bar to bar and discover small but flavorful bites that showcase Basque culinary excellence.

8) Azkuna Zentroa (Alhóndiga)

This former wine warehouse is now a creative cultural hub. Its striking interior design and varied activities make it a lively meeting place.

9) Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park

A green oasis near the city center, perfect for a relaxing walk. Fountains, trees, and open spaces provide a calm contrast to city life.

10) Day Trips to Nearby Towns

Bilbao is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding region, with charming towns and diverse landscapes just a short journey away. Visit coastal spots like Getxo and Sopelana, historic towns such as Gernika or Durango, or scenic villages like Bermeo, each offering a different perspective on Basque culture and nature.
