Best Things to Do in Oulu

Oulu – Culture, Nature, and Innovation

Oulu is a northern Finnish city that combines urban life with immediate access to nature. Winters are snowy and cold, with chances to see the northern lights, while summers are short, green, and bright with long days.

Nature is always close. Sanginjoki Nature Reserve offers trails and quiet outdoor spaces near the city, while the compact urban area provides seaside access, cultural venues, and services. Cycling is popular year-round, supported by an extensive network of bike paths.

Oulu is known for technology, education, and sustainability. The city has been chosen as one of the European Capital of Culture 2026 cities, hosting exhibitions, performances, and projects such as the Arctic Food Lab and the Climate Clock public art trail.

Internationally, Oulu has been featured by the BBC as one of the world’s best places to visit in 2026, praised for its mix of northern nature, culture, and activities throughout the year.

Its location also makes it a gateway to Lapland, with Rovaniemi—on the Arctic Circle and home of Santa Claus—just 2.5 hours away by train.

1) Oulu Cathedral

The idyllic peace of the Hupisaaret islands, consisting of many small islands, is less than a ten-minute walk from the hustle and bustle of the town center. The babbling streams offer a beautiful soundscape in the summertime, and you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the endangered sea trout in the River Oulujoki. The Hupisaaret islands also have a central playground, a barbecue area, a rose garden, and a sample greenhouse open to the public.

2) Market Square and the Market Hall

The Market Square is especially inviting in the summer. Visitors are sure to enjoy the old warehouses and salt storehouses located by the waterfront. The oldest ones date back to the late 1700s and early 1800s. Today, the barns house intimate cafes, restaurants, and craft boutiques, and are ideal places to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a seaside town.

3) Toripolliisi Statue

The Toripolliisi statue is located at the Market Square in front of the Market Hall. The bronze sculpture was designed by Kaarlo Mikkonen and the work is a tribute to the police who patrolled the Market Square from 1934 to 1979. Make sure you take a selfie with Bobby, a chubby 2,2 meters tall policeman.

4) Nallikari Beach

The magnificent one-kilometer-long Nallikari beach in Hietasaari is an inviting seaside destination in all seasons. Stunning sunsets, the thrillingly colorful Northern Lights, and the frozen sea in wintertime are all unforgettable experiences. Oulu residents also enjoy spending their free time in the natural surroundings of Hietasaari.

5) Tiima – Museum and Science Centre

Tiima is a new museum and science centre in Oulu, opening in October 2026. It brings together science, history, art, and interactive exhibitions under one roof, offering engaging and hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages.

6) Wooden Old Town in Pikisaari Island

Pikisaari is a charming island located right next to Oulu city centre, known for its well-preserved wooden houses and historic atmosphere. Today, it is home to artists, artisans, small galleries, and cafés, making it a lively cultural spot.

7) Sauna – The Oulu Way

Oulu’s sauna culture offers an authentic Finnish experience, often connected with nature and the sea. From traditional public saunas to unique experiences, it’s all about relaxation, wellbeing, and local lifestyle.

8) Sanginjoki Nature Reserve

Sanginjoki Nature Reserve is located about 20 km southeast of Oulu city centre. It offers peaceful forest landscapes and well-marked trails, perfect for walking and enjoying nature. It’s an ideal place to experience the quiet beauty of northern Finland.
